     V.S. Savchuk is a scientist in the field of research on the composition, quality and trends of rational use of coal. He was born on August 9, 1947 in Dnepropetrovsk, in the family of a scientist and medical worker. He graduated from high school № 23. He received his higher education from the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute (now NTU "Dnipro Polytechnic") at the Faculty of Geology, majoring in Geology and Prospecting of Mineral Deposits (1970). For two years he served as a lieutenant in the Soviet Army. Then he worked at the Institute of Geotechnical Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1972 - 1977, Department of Material Composition). From 1977 to 2007 - Senior Engineer, Head of Unit, Junior Researcher, Senior Researcher, Leading Researcher in the Coal Division of the Dnipropetrovsk Branch of the Institute of Mineral Resources.

      Since 2007 he has been a professor in the Department of Geology and Mineral Prospecting of the National Mining University.

      V. Savchuk’s scientific interests lie in the realm of research into the composition and quality of coal of Ukraine, and in the substantiation of the directions of its rational use.

      In 1983 he defended his PhD thesis in the specialty "Geology, prospecting and exploration of solid combustible minerals", and in 2006 - doctoral dissertation in the specialty "Geology of fossil fuels" on the topic "Lower Carboniferous Coal of Ukraine: Its Composition, Quality and Main Directions of Rational Use”.

     V.S. Savchuk’s main scientific achievements relate to the research of coal of the Lower Carboniferous coal of Ukraine, assessment of its petrographic composition and quality, establishment of laws and factors of their change and determination of possibilities of its rational use in various branches of national economy. Professor Savchuk provides training of high-quality personnel. He is the Head of the Qualifying Board of the NTU "Dnipro Polytechnic". V.S. Savchuk has published about 80 printed works and received an author's certificate. He is one of the authors of a monograph on correlation between Carbonaceous coal formations of the Lviv-Volyn and Lublin basins. He was awarded the sports category of Candidate for Master of Sports in basketball. He participated in many competitions of all-union and republican levels, and became champion of the USSR basketball competition among national Academies (1976) and multiple champion in competitions for sports veterans of Ukraine in his age category. As part of the national team of Ukraine he became a silver medalist at the European Championship (2012) and a world champion (2013).
