Department of Geology and Mineral Prospecting Department of Geology and Mineral Prospecting have originated since 1914 for mining engineer-geologists studying for exploration activities and prospecting of mineral deposits. Training of the highly skilled specialists
Course of training – “0707 Geology”, profession – “7(8).070701 Geology” Object of specialists’ activity – exploration activities and prospecting of mineral deposits. Economic activity category of specialists – geology and geological prospecting, mining industry and stone-working industry. After the education by profession “Geology” was received, graduating student can have next positions on enterprises: geologist, mine geologist (opencast mine geologist etc.), head of a group, head of a department, supervisor of geological survey, scientific officer and lecturer. Professional functions of specialists: - Field operations conducting upon district studying (mineral deposit). - Creation of the enterprise plans and construction documents; organization and liquidation of the field works. - Drawing up of generalized materials above results of geological works. - Control above compliance with the methodic researches, instructions and requirements upon implementation of the geological prospecting. - Control above compliance with the rules of an accounting and safekeeping of geological materials. - Realization of experimental-methodic and methodical works. - Compliance with the law on environmental and subsoil protection, safety engineering, industrial sanitation and fire safety at geological prospecting.
Educational process At the Department educational process is provided by highly skilled teachers, scientific officers and personnel. There are 4 Doctors of Geology (Professors), 5 Candidates of geological sciences (Associate Professors) among them. Altogether there are 17 employees, including scientific workers and service personnel. At the disposal of the Department of Geology and Mineral Prospecting there are 3 lecture rooms for practical and theoretical studies conducting, computer class for conducting studies of mathematics and computer modeling of geologic processes, laboratory for minerals research. The last one has up-to-date microscopes for minerals and rocks diagnostic in reflected and transmitted light. Unique collections of rock and mineral samples are preserved and replenished. The same is related for the lot of preparations for microscopic investigations (thin sections, polished sections). All practical and theoretical studies at the Department of Geology and Mineral Prospecting are provided oneself by methodic aids, course books and textbooks. Main directions of Department scientific activities: - Geological building and forming conditions of coal-bearing formations; - Coal-bearing; - Qualities and properties of coals; - Mining-geological peculiarities of coal deposits field development; - Geological factors and conditions of garnet deposits forming; - Geological conditions of the metasomatic formation forming within green-stone belts. Post-graduate courses at the Department of Geology and Mineral Prospecting are open by the next professions: - 04.00.11 – Geology of metallic and nonmetallic minerals; - 04.00.16 – Geology of solid combustible minerals.
